WELCOME TO THE BAND FAMILY

The Homewood Middle School Band is an award-winning program dedicated to fostering a deep love for music and community, while developing personal discipline, and creating a vibrant culture for all. With over 500 students in grades 6th thru 8th, we represent the very best of Homewood City Schools.

OUR ENSEMBLES

• 6th Grade Beginning Band: The foundation! No prior experience required. Students learn fundamentals, music reading, and team collaboration.

• 7th & 8th Grade Concert Bands: Intermediate ensembles expanding on technical skills. These groups represent HMS at regional concert festivals and community events.

• Jazz Band, Brass/Woodwind/Percussion Ensemble, Patriot Time Band: Audition-based ensembles exploring classic swing, funk, rock, and the foundations of musical improvisation and expression. Students will also prepare for state honor bands during this time. This is in addition to their normal band schedule. Students can explore these groups starting in 7th grade.

Woodwinds: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Oboe, Bassoon

Brass: Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba

Percussion: Snare, Mallets, Timpani, Auxiliary Percussion

Ryan Murrell

Bringing a dynamic approach to ensemble instruction, Mr. Murrell specializes in developing balanced full-band instrumentation and building exceptional fundamental habits in young musicians. Under his baton with high-energy, the bands routinely capture top honors for execution and musical nuance. He helps to find a place for all students who want to be part of the band.

With an extensive background in early woodwind pedagogy and ensemble blend, Ms. Owens focuses on technical development, section synchronicity, and music theory. She is deeply committed to ensuring every student finds confidence and expression through their instrument.

Emphasizing rhythmic precision, quality of sound, and student leadership, Mr. Rice works across percussion sections to build cohesive musicianship and teamwork. He fosters an inclusive environment that motivates students to exceed their expectations
